Chapter Thirty

“Holy crow. Were you a racecar driver in a previous incarnation?” I said, gripping the Gremlin’s dashboard.

“I used to street race when I was young and foolish,” said Marco as he maneuvered with the precision of an Indy racecar driver through the dense expressway traffic.

“Like in Rebel Without a Cause?”

“More like The Fast and the Furious. And it’s a good thing I’m experienced, or you wouldn’t stand a chance of making your flight.”

“As long as you don’t do that Tokyo Drift thing on the off ramp,” I said.

Marco turned to me for an instant with a huge grin on his face. “My mission, Kalena Boyko, as I’ve chosen to accept it is to deliver you to the airport, as fast as I can, and in one piece,” said Marco.

“Good. I have no intention of losing my life sliding off some hair pin turn on a Toronto freeway. Aye carumba, Jim Phelps! Watch out for that transport!” I flung my arms upwards and covered my eyes.

“Merda,” yelled Marco.

“What’s the matter?” I said with my hands still obscuring my view.

“Look up ahead.”

I opened one eye before dropping my hands like dead weights. “Merda is right.” We were about to join four lanes of halted, bumper-to-bumper traffic that formed a sea of multi-coloured metal that stretched for miles ahead of us.

“I’ve never seen anything like this, not even in a blizzard,” said Marco.

Sensing my eyes well up with tears, I shifted my gaze out the passenger window. The day had finally broken me. Via the window’s reflection I watched Marco snag a cell phone from the visor and flip it open.

“You shouldn’t be driving and using the phone.”

“It’s an emergency.”

“Who are you calling?” I said, holding back the waterworks and still looking away.

“My sister’s boyfriend. If anyone can get us out of this mess, he can.”

“How can he do anything?”

“Hey, Vince. It’s Mark. How’s the cab dispatching biz today?”

Mark? He calls himself Mark?

“I bet. I’m in the thick of it myself. I’m driving a friend to the airport. What are you getting on the radio? Any cabbies found a secret passageway yet?…No kidding. That’s the closest you can get?...I guess that’s what we’re gonna have to do…Thanks, man…” Marco snapped his phone shut.

“What’d he say?”

“Hold on. I’ve gotta’ make the exit up ahead.”

“No Tokyo Drifting,” I screamed as we shot across three lanes of honking cars before sliding onto an exit ramp.

“Sorry. It was the only way I could get off the highway in time.”

“Where are we going?” My heart pounded uncontrollably.

“Vince said to head down Dixie Road as far as traffic is still movin’. But once it slows down, he said to pull off, ’cause there’s just no point after that. Everyone’s dropping off passengers on Dixie and they’re walking into the terminals from there.”

My patent leather pumps gleamed up at me. I had to wear heels today, didn’t I? I was going to wear a pair of pants and flats, but I had opted out of comfort clothing and wore a pencil skirt and sexy shoes so I would look smashing when Geoffrey picked me up.
